International Irish Company of the Year 2009

Alltech
Alltech is a global animal health company providing natural, nutritional solutions to the food and feed industries. Headquartered in Kentucky, USA, Alltech trades in 113 countries and has over 1900 employees worldwide.
Alltech was founded in 1980 in Kentucky, USA by Irish-born scientist Dr. Pearse Lyons to pioneer natural yeast fermentation and enzyme technology for the animal feed industry. Today, Alltech is still privately owned which affords the company a clear competitive advantage in terms of marketing and industrial efficiency, breadth of products and targeted research and development. Alltech has a strong regional presence in North America, Europe, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia-Pacific, with fourteen production facilities strategically located across the globe.
Alltech's core competencies lie in yeast fermentation, peptide technology and solid state fermentation. The company’s core business is animal nutrition and aquaculture, generating 90% of sales. Alltech works with most of the largest feed manufacturers in the world providing them with products that not only provide value financially, but that are natural and friendly to the animal, consumer and the environment.
Alltech's family of products helps livestock breeders overcome performance issues linked to gut health, mastitis and immunity, while bringing gains in animal reproduction, productivity and fertility. Alltech solutions are widely adopted by the dairy, poultry and pig, equine, aquaculture and pet sectors.
At Alltech, innovation in product development is actively encouraged. Undergraduate, MSc and doctoral degree students have access to technology and research in the company's three Bioscience Centres in Kentucky, Ireland and Thailand under the Alltech Science Internship and Young Scientist programmes.
Through the company’s ‘Marketing through Education’ initiative, whose major events include the annual Alltech Animal Health and Nutrition Symposium and regional Lecture Tours, Alltech shares the company’s latest discoveries and animal health research with its customers, for the benefit of all industry stakeholders.
The Alltech Quality System, (AQS), is recognised across the feed industry as a standard to follow. The AQS delivers the exact same level of quality assurance and traceability in each of Alltech's geographical markets, based on a uniform process designed to meet and exceed other third-party systems of certification.
In April 2008, Alltech unveiled its Nutrigenomics Centre in Nicholasville, Kentucky. The first facility of its kind in the world, the Nutrigenomics Centre is dedicated to extending basic research observations gathered from gene expression profiling studies to practical applications and solutions in the field.
Using gene chips that contain the genetic code of an animal, Nutrigenomics enables Alltech to measure the effects of certain nutritional supplements, and how they alter the gene's instruction of the body. Nutrigenomics and selenium use are closely linked and can deliver gains in animal productivity and reproduction.
In 2006, Alltech announced a sponsorship deal with the FEI World Equestrian Games, which will be held in Kentucky, USA in 2010. The investment is the single largest sponsorship the Games have ever seen. Alltech is now the title sponsor of this prestigious event and the Games have been renamed the Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games.
