OUTSTANDING ACHIEVEMENT IN BUSINESS AWARD 2010

T.P. Hardiman, Chairman, Telegael Media Group
T.P. Hardiman holds institutional and commercial directorships. He joined the Irish telecommunications service following graduation in Engineering and in Science from University College Dublin and later joined the broadcasting services. His work in the radio and television broadcasting services included a variety of responsibilities in programme management and financial affairs before his appointment as Director General of Raidió Telefís Éireann in 1968 while still in his thirties. He held the position for seven years and he has been active in commercial, industrial and scientific life in Ireland and internationally since then.
He was active in scientific and technological policy development and was founding chairman of the National Board for Science and Technology 1978 to 2003. He has been active in telecommunications strategy development, was President of the International Institute of Communications and Chairman of the IIC International Telecommunications Forum from 1988 to 2000. He was Chairman of the international commission reviewing technological education in Ireland in the late eighties which let to the establishment of DCU and LU. He was Chancellor of DCU 1998 to 2001. He was President of the Confederation of Irish Industry in the early eighties and President of the Dublin Chamber of Commerce during 1988, the Dublin Millennium year.
He served as the Irish member of the Board of Governors of the Asia Europe Foundation in Singapore 2000 to 2010. He is currently a member of the Supervisory Board of of the EU-Japan Centre for Industrial Cooperation, Tokyo and a Member of the EU Japan Business
Dialogue Round Table. He is Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Chester Beatty Library and Gallery of Oriental Art, Dublin Castle.
He was elected a member of the Royal Irish Academy in November 1980 and he was decorated with the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold and Silver Star by the Emperor of Japan in April 1986. He was conferred LL.D. by the National University of Ireland in April 1990 and D.Litt. by Lynn University, Florida in October 1995.
